FF/PM John McKay was injured in a work-related fall while serving the community as a firefighter/paramedic. What was first believed to be a concussion and traumatic brain injury was later discovered to be a serious cervical spine injury that went undiagnosed for several weeks. By the time he underwent cervical spine surgery, he had lost feeling in his fingers, hands, arms, legs, feet, and toes, raising the frightening possibility that some of the damage could be permanent. Today, 12 weeks after surgery, John has regained feeling in all of those extremities, a blessing his family does not take for granted. On July 11, 2026, he will return to his neurosurgeon to evaluate his recovery and determine how well his spinal fusion is healing.
For more than 30 years, John has dedicated his life to serving others as a firefighter and paramedic, making service not just his profession but a defining part of who he is. His greatest hope is to receive medical clearance to return to the career and community he has faithfully served for decades, while remaining grateful for the healing he has already experienced regardless of the outcome. Unfortunately, although workers' compensation has covered treatment related to his concussion, it has denied coverage for his cervical spine injury, surgery, follow-up care, and ongoing treatment. As a result, the financial burden of his medical expenses continues to grow, creating significant challenges for John and his family. Let’s support John and his family as they navigate the path to recovery.
