South Carolina Fire Engineer Timothy Potter’s circumstances have worsened significantly in recent months. In November, he was removed from light duty and placed on unpaid leave after being denied FMLA. During an ongoing workers’ compensation dispute, he was diagnosed with asthma, which has been deemed disqualifying under NFPA 1582, preventing his return as a fire engineer. He has not received a paycheck since December and has been unable to secure other work in fire investigation or inspection. His family is in severe financial distress, with only $25 in the bank, a mortgage nearly five months past due, and limited income from his wife’s recent employment. He continues paying $265 monthly to maintain health insurance, while his workers’ compensation case remains unresolved with no clear timeline for disability evaluation or settlement.

Fire Engineer Potter’s situation began after a February 2024 knee injury sustained on duty at a motor vehicle collision. Initially minor, the injury worsened and was later diagnosed as a torn ACL, hamstring strain, and partial dislocation. Treatment was delayed for months due to workers’ compensation disputes, requiring legal intervention before he received an MRI and physical therapy. Additional pain reported during therapy remains untreated. Though he expects a full recovery, ongoing delays and financial strain have taken a serious toll. The family has exhausted savings, accumulated debt, and struggled to keep up with expenses, leaving them uncertain how to move forward. Let’s clear a path to recovery for the Potter family.
