South Carolina’s Charles Patten is a Captain with the Columbia Fire Department who has served his community for over 18 years. In early 2025, his wife, Melody (known by close friends and family as Mel), was diagnosed with leukemia and went through the trials and tribulations of chemotherapy. She was strong through the process and was initially thought to have beaten the illness, but unfortunately, the cancer was not yet in remission. In March 2026, Melody was able to begin the next step of her treatment, having found a suitable bone marrow donor. The transplant was a complete success, and the doctors determined she was cancer-free.

Shortly after Melody set out on her road to recovery, tragedy struck. A sudden case of pneumonia caused fluid buildup in her lungs and, ultimately, her heart to stop. She passed away April 17, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones. Cpt. Patten has always looked out for his guys— let’s look out for the Patten family while they navigate this difficult loss.
