For the past 39 years, Marc McDermott has proudly served the citizens of Chicago as a dedicated member of the Chicago Fire Department. Throughout his career, he has exemplified courage, integrity, and selflessness while earning the respect of fellow firefighters and the communities he has protected. Marc has also spent many years serving Chicago Fire Fighters Union Local 2, helping negotiate contracts and advocate for his brothers and sisters in the fire service. More recently, he has been a strong advocate for modernizing aging fire apparatus in Chicago and across the country to improve firefighter and public safety. Marc is also a devoted husband and proud father of two college graduates who have watched him lead by example through a lifetime of service.
Today, Marc is facing one of the toughest battles of his life after being diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and beginning treatment. True to the person he has always been, he continues to face every challenge with strength, determination, and optimism. His resilience has inspired family, friends, and the members of Tower 14 and Engine 117. Those who know Marc are grateful to call him their mentor and friend. We remain confident that he will fight this battle with the same courage that has defined his career and life. Let’s show Marc and his family we’ve got their backs, always.
