Alabama’s Jason Mahaffey served his community at Birmingham FD for over 18 years before being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease due to work-related exposure. Per his diagnosis, Jason was forced to retire two years early, cutting his pension in half. Consequentially, he is also currently denied Social Security checks.
Birmingham news media has even taken notice to Jason’s story. Since publication, a new bill has been written up and proposed by state representatives that would add Parkinson’s to the list of work-related hazards, granting Jason and others in his situation full disability benefits.
Still, despite the media coverage, necessities and nice days for the Mahaffey family are becoming fewer and farther between due to the state’s shortcomings. Let’s show them all the love and support our community has to offer while they navigate this trying situation.
