Imagine a life dedicated to service, running towards danger when others flee. That's Colin Sperry. A 33-year-old firefighter, a husband, a brother in the brotherhood, and a pillar of our community. But life, as we know, can shift in an instant.
Colin, a man who spends his days battling flames, found himself facing an unexpected inferno within. What began as a nagging feeling, dismissed as a stubborn cold, turned into a terrifying reality. "I felt like absolute dogshit," Colin shared, recalling the start of this year. His wife, sensing something more, urged him to the ER. And thank God she did.
The diagnosis was swift and brutal: Diffuse Large B-Cell NH Lymphoma. A large mediastinal mass, not fluid, was revealed in his chest X-ray. Cancer. At 33.

The brotherhood of firefighters is a bond unlike any other. On February 15th, 2025, we lost one of our own, Leroy Terrell, in a tragic accident. Leroy was a dedicated member of the Ellettsville Fire Department and served with Monroe Fire District, Pleasant Run Fire Department, and Lawrence County Fire Territory. He answered the call to serve every day, and now it's our turn to answer the call for his family. On February 2nd, the world turned upside down for the Barss family. Ayden, the son of Saratoga Springs Fire IAFF Local 343 member Derrick Barss, was admitted to Albany Medical Center, initially diagnosed with the flu. Tragically, Ayden's condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to pneumonia, a tension pneumothorax, and lung necrosis. He underwent emergency surgery to place a chest tube and now faces a long and challenging road to recovery.

Urgent: Our Hero Mason Adams Needs Our Support
On December 22nd, 2024, 22-year-old firefighter Mason Adams faced a terrifying situation – a house fire that engulfed the home he was in. With incredible bravery, Mason rescued his girlfriend and her 11-month-old child from the flames. Tragically, in the process, Mason sustained second and third-degree burns to 75% of his body.
Mason is currently in the burn unit at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, facing a long and challenging recovery. Doctors estimate he could be hospitalized for three to six months, enduring multiple surgeries and intensive treatment. As a welder, Mason will be unable to work during this time, leaving him without income.

With medical specialists located in Indianapolis, an hour away from their home in Logansport, the family anticipates frequent travel for appointments and treatments. Adding to the burden, their insurance deductible will reset in the new year, creating additional financial strain.

On December 1st, after finishing a 24-hour shift protecting our community, Firefighter Colin Kowalski received devastating news: his home was on fire. Thankfully, his wife Abbi and their two children are safe, but the fire resulted in a total loss of their home and all their belongings.
Colin, a dedicated 7-year South Bend Fire Department member, now faces the daunting task of rebuilding his life. To make matters worse, Colin was informed that his homeowner’s insurance had been canceled due to a missed payment from his escrow account, leaving him with no financial safety net.
