The Call No One Wants to Hear
On Christmas Eve, the tone dropped for a call that every first responder dreads. Mundelein Firefighter/Paramedic Angel Gonzaga received word that his mother was unresponsive in his childhood home.
His own brothers from the Mundelein Fire Department responded immediately, rushing her to the ER. Upon arrival, doctors discovered she had suffered a catastrophic hemorrhagic stroke. Despite the best efforts of the medical teams and the prayers of family, the damage was too severe.
A Holiday Turned Heartbreak
On Christmas Day—a day meant for joy and family—Angel and his loved ones faced the agonizing decision to remove her from life support.
In the span of 24 hours, the Gonzaga family went from holiday preparations to mourning a profound loss. With this sudden tragedy comes the unexpected and overwhelming burden of medical bills and funeral expenses.
